UTI symptoms: what to watch for
Urinary tract infections are common, but some symptoms need faster or in-person care. This guide can help you prepare for a medical evaluation.
Common symptoms
- Burning or pain when urinating
- Needing to urinate more often or urgently
- Passing small amounts of urine
- Lower abdominal discomfort
- Cloudy, strong-smelling, or blood-tinged urine
Before your visit
Be ready to share when symptoms started, whether you have fever or back pain, any recent UTIs, allergies, current medications, pregnancy status when relevant, and the pharmacy you prefer.
Seek urgent care now
Prompt in-person evaluation may be needed for high fever, shaking chills, vomiting, severe side or back pain, confusion, pregnancy with urinary symptoms, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Call 911 for a medical emergency.
A note about diagnosis
Other conditions can cause similar symptoms. A clinician will determine whether telemedicine is appropriate and whether testing or in-person care is needed.
